Careers Education & Guidance – Gloucestershire Hospital Education Service

Careers education and guidance is a vital part of the educational provision at Gloucestershire Hospital Education Service (GHES). Our careers delivery and guidance is tailored to the needs of the individual students and we aim to deliver careers guidance that is effective and impartial.  Our policy is to support, encourage and enable pupils to make informed choices and transitions related to their personal, educational and career development. The careers programme is comprehensive and underpinned by the GATSBY benchmarks and guidance from the Department of Education.

The Gatsby Benchmarks underpin the careers provision at GHES:

  • A stable careers programme
  • Learning from career and labour market information
  • Addressing the needs of each pupil
  • Linking curriculum learning to careers
  • Encounters with employers and employees
  • Experiences of workplaces
  • Encounters with further and higher education
  • Personal guidance

Careers guidance is delivered through; our PSHE/ Wellbeing programme, Link Tutor input for one to one support, career review sessions (from year 9 onwards) with the careers leader, independent advice and guidance from a qualified careers advisor, and speaker sessions. Additional information sources include participation in events and activities; these include those organised by GHES, home schools and external organisations which we make our parents and pupils aware of through the parent’s news bulletin. Visits to colleges and other post 16 providers are supported by the Link Tutors where appropriate.  Students also have access to a range of additional resources via our VLE.

In a constantly changing working environment we are committed to preparing our students to make informed and appropriate choices to meet their individual needs. We aim to inspire our students and raise their aspirations by offering them as much information as possible about the world of work and by developing their own skills set during their time with GHES.

Our programme focusses on developing skills and awareness for pupils throughout their time with GHES including; developing and updated a professional CV; facilitating taking part in work based experiences, interview support and practice. We support and guide all our year 11’s to make informed choices about post 16 options in year 11.

GHES strives to develop close links with local businesses and the community. If you would like to support our careers programme please contact us using the following email:, or using our office number: 01242 532363.

The careers leader is Aileen Clough. The careers programme is reviewed annually.
