Honours
The Lieutenancy offers support for the nomination of National Honours
To encourage nominations, the Lieutenancy has engaged help:
- To provide information about the Honours process;
- To encourage nominations from all parts of the ceremonial county, i.e. Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire
- To support individuals embarking on the process of nominating an individual for an honour
There are 3 main stages to the Honours process.
Stage 1
- Identifying a person who meets the criteria for a national honour
- Establishing a case which must provide evidence about the individual’s contribution in voluntary, public service or commercial organisations
Stage 2
- Completing the forms, which can be obtained from the Cabinet Office website
- Finding 3 / 4 individuals able to write citations to support the case: the aim is to provide a rounded picture of the individual’s contribution
Stage 3
- Making the submission to the Cabinet Office
- The outcome, which maynot be known for at least 18 months

Buckingham Palace Garden Parties
His Majesty The King hosts several Royal Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace each year, with approximately 8,000 guests attending each Garden Party. On occasion, additional garden parties are added to the royal calendar to recognise noteworthy people from specific sectors of the community.
Throughout the country, a long-established network of sponsors is relied on to invite guests from all walks of life, including Lord-Lieutenants, Societies and Associations, Government Departments, Local Government, Uniformed Services, and faith groups. This approach ensures a representative cross-section of the community is invited, and that guests are people who have made a substantial contribution to their organisations or society. It is not possible to nominate a person to attend a Royal Garden Party through direct application to Buckingham Palace.
Lieutenancies across the country are allocated a designated number of invitations before being asked to nominate worthy individuals from across their counties to attend Garden Parties. In addition, the Lord-Lieutenant seeks nominations from local organisations and from people across the county, including nominations from Deputy Lieutenants and from Local Charities and the Voluntary Sector.
To nominate someone
If you would like to nominate a worthy individual to attend a Royal Garden Party, please contact the Lieutenancy Office via email, (preferred option), marked for the attention of the Lord-Lieutenant at edward.gillespie@gloucestershire.gov.uk or, alternatively, write to the Lord-Lieutenant’s Office, C/O Gloucestershire County Council, Shire Hall, Westgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 2TG
Please include details of why you think the person being nominated should be considered for nomination. Where possible, please provide the person’s name, full postal address and a contact email address or telephone number.
The Lord-Lieutenant makes every effort to ensure that a wide cross section of the community is reflected in his Garden Party submission. The selection process is normally completed by the end of January each year, with a recommended deadline for the submission of nominations for gardens parties the following year of 31 December each year.
Nominees should not have attended a previous garden party. They must be British Citizens and 18 years of age or over. Nominees should live in the county or fulfil their ‘work’ within the Gloucestershire or South Gloucestershire area. Ideally, nominations should be for past achievements.
If the Lord-Lieutenant is supportive of the nomination, the person being nominated may be added to a waiting list for final consideration by the Royal Garden Party Office at Buckingham Palace. At this stage, you will be notified of whether the nomination has been accepted for submission.
It is important to inform the nominee that their personal details and information relating to their work within the county will be processed in accordance with the Gloucestershire County Council Data Protection Policy and may be shared with the Royal Household.
It is also important to advise the nominee that, pending confirmation by the Royal Garden Party on whether the nomination is successful, (normally in late Spring), there are no guarantees that the person being nominated will receive an invitation.
If you would like to discuss the nomination process in more detail, please contact the Lieutenancy Office via email on edward.gillespie@gloucestershire.gov.uk
We look forward to hearing from you and learning more about the exceptional members of our community.
