The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort (information and guidance for communities

His Majesty King Charles III ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, at Balmoral Castle, Scotland on 8 September 2022. As is tradition, the Coronation, (a religious ceremonial event), will be held on Saturday 6 May 2023, where His Majesty The King will take the Coronation Oath. The Coronation Ceremony is an occasion for pageantry and celebration, but is also a solemn religious ceremony and has remained essentially the same for over a thousand years. For the past 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey, London. The Coronation Service on 6 May 2023 will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose task this has been since the Norman Conquest in 1066. Her Majesty The Queen Consort will also be crowned during the Coronation Service.

In 2022, the Government proclaimed an additional bank holiday to mark the Coronation. The bank holiday, which takes place across the United Kingdom, will fall on Monday 8 May 2023, as part of a weekend of celebrations. In an announcement earlier in the year, Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak said: "The Coronation of a new Monarch is a unique moment for our country. In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom on 8 May 2023. I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III and The Queen Consort by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour."

The Lieutenancy hope the people of Gloucestershire will come together to celebrate this historic event through their own community celebrations.  Guidance for residents on how to organise a street party can be found here. Should you wish to produce your own ‘Coronation themed’ publicity, a Coronation Emblem has been produced and can be viewed on the https://www.royal.uk/coronation section of the https://www.royal.uk/ royal website. Coronation Day, itself, will be a designated flag day, whereby all UK government buildings are required to fly the Union flag.

Throughout the rest of Coronation Weekend, there will be further opportunities for people to come together in celebration of this historic occasion. On Sunday 7th May 2023, a special Coronation Concert will be staged and broadcast live at Windsor Castle by the BBC and BBC Studios, with several thousand pairs of tickets made available via public ballot.

The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together, will take place across the United Kingdom on the same date (7th May 2023).

On Monday, 8th May 2023, members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, to encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. On the morning of Monday 8 May 2023, the Bishop of Gloucester and the Dean of Gloucester will host a special service as part of the Big Help Out celebrations. Invitations to the service are being coordinated by the Cathedral. Highlighting the positive impact of community, emphasis on volunteering, (the theme of the Coronation celebrations), will form part of the service.
