The role of a Newly Qualified Social Worker
Our Assissted and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) training programme will support you to grow and develop to work on the front line alongside experienced and established Social Workers within your team. You will be mentored and guided as you build your knowledge and skills. Further to this our Practice Learning Team will provide bespoke planned support to ensure you achieve your potential.
I’m a Newly Qualified Social Worker working in the Safeguarding Team. I was here as a student in my final placement for university and I was placed in that team.
I then came back in July as pre-qualified and the actual ASYE programme starts in September.
The ASYE programme includes a lot of training such as court training, child protection, how to take on more complex caseloads etc. The ASYE programme provides really good supervision through group supervision and reflection groups. You also have a portfolio to complete including observations and feedback – similar to university but at the next level.
I had excellent training from the beginning. I had an induction programme when I started, I have shadowed other social workers in the team at all levels from Advanced Practitioners to Newly Qualified Social Workers. My manager has been fantastic, always checking in to make sure I was getting the support I need. I have regular supervisions which are reflective and give me a chance to talk about my work and the families I’m working with. These have made me feel safe and supported in my team and in my role. The support really has been excellent from day one from my head of service, service lead, colleagues in my team, team managers and HR – at all levels really.
One of the things I have enjoyed so far about my ASYE is having the chance to take on new challenges. I think that is one of the positive things about Gloucestershire Children’s Services. You are given the freedom to take on new challenges and are trusted to do so but you are also really supported, there is always someone to listen and that has been really helpful when taking on the new challenges. It has made me feel like a valued member of the team.
The Practice Learning Team has been brilliant all the way through my time here. They really helped me ease in from university to ASYE. It was a very smooth transition as they work closely with the team I am working in. You aren’t just thrown in, you are really supported.
After my ASYE, I want to stay in the team and take on more new challenges. I am very happy in the role I am in and there is a lot of development opportunities in the team at the moment so I plan to progress through the team via the career pathway.
I came in as a student and I have chosen to stay at Gloucestershire Children’s Services as I have had incredible support so far and know I will be supported to achieve my goals. The support you get at Gloucestershire is fantastic and the ASYE programme is constantly improving and developing. There is a really nice atmosphere here as well as really good offer, especially with the new salary increase.
There is a lot of diversity in Gloucestershire and a great variation in the families you work with. No two days will be the same. It allows you to work with a lot of different agencies and work with other professionals. Although this is challenging, this will expand my knowledge and help me become a great social worker.
