The role of a Social Worker
As a children’s social worker you will work to ensure we keep the children and young people at the heart of our assessments and decision making. Through working with other staff within the service and partner agencies you will ensure we are able to provide support and protection for children and young people in need and at risk.
I work in the Gloucester Safeguarding Team as a Social Worker and I started at Gloucestershire’s Children’s Services in February 2017.
I have received good support in terms of supervision. I received regular supervision as well as support from experienced Social Workers. In my supervisions I was able to reflect on my practice and ask questions when I wasn’t sure about what I was doing. I was supported in all areas of my work and received a lot of support from the Practice Learning Team who provided me with a variety of learning resources which was useful as a Newly Qualified Social Worker. They really helped me get where I am today.
I enjoy what I do. I enjoy working with children. It’s a real privilege to work with children and families and making sure I am the key person who can make change. I really like what I do and for me, it is a place where you can make a good change for people and make good outcomes for them. The other great thing about being a social worker is that you can never get bored. Everyday is a different day and no day is the same.
The most challenging aspect of the career is dealing with families that have given up and cannot accept change anymore as they feel they have been failed by the system and professionals before. Getting families to refocus is difficult but I have learnt to work from a different perspective.
In Gloucestershire, you get a lot of experience and deal with complex cases which give you that experience. You get to be exposed to different ideas in lots of different places. You deal with a vast amount of people and a variety of issues.
We also get good management and supervision and I work in a high spirited and supportive team. One other thing I like about Gloucestershire is that the senior management can be reached at any time, you never feel on your own. It is a really good place to work.
I love working in Gloucestershire as it really promotes cultural diversity, that’s really important to me. Here we have procedures in place that encourage that and encourage fairness.
