Community Dementia Link (CDL)

This free course delivers bespoke dementia awareness education to people who work in organisations outside of the health and social care workforce, eg community and voluntary groups. The course aims to meet the needs of local communities as well as the people who attend for the course.  It also encourages confidence in individuals and groups to support the person with dementia and their families. Ongoing coaching and mentoring support is offered from the Dementia Education Team.

The course comprises 12 hours’ training, which can be delivered to suit the group, eg, as half day or full day workshops.  Topics frequently considered are:

  • The brain and dementia,
  • The environment,
  • Communicating with a person who is living with dementia ,
  • Person centred care and the 5 psychological needs
  • Practical skills and project planning.

Once completed, participants are signed off as CDLs (Community Dementia Links).  They are then connected to the network of Gloucestershire Dementia Action Alliances and also have the opportunity to link in with the Dementia Training and Education Strategy network via newsletters and monthly support forums on dementia-related topics.
