Section 1 of the scheme will continue the cycleway that is currently under construction from Elmbridge Court Roundabout to Arle Court Roundabout, via Churchdown, Innsworth and Staverton.

The new cycle facilities in Section 1 will include an end-to-end off carriageway cycle track made up of single direction segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the carriageway transitioning to a two-way segregated cycle track on northern side at Elmbridge Road. There will be a short length of shared use facility east of Old Cheltenham Road where narrow highway boundary widths constrain the design options available. More details can be found in the Scheme drawings below.

The scheme has been designed to limit the loss of hedgerows and trees wherever we can, with most of the scheme making use of existing hardstanding and grass verges. There are however some locations where highway trees will be affected on the north side of the road. This is in order to retain the more mature trees on the south side. The removal of these is necessary to support our vital cycling and walking improvements which will support wider carbon reductions and improve public health in the long term. To compensate for this, we aim to plant at least the same or double the number of trees along the route while moving some of the younger trees to different sites, in line with the Councils targets to improve biodiversity.

The scheme aligns with Gloucestershire County Council’s aims of becoming carbon net zero by 2045, whilst improving public health by promoting active travel options and supporting improved sustainable access to employment, education and housing.

The council conducted a comprehensive consultation between 5 September and 17 October on the section between Oxstalls Lane and Elmbridge Court, with in-person events held on 14 September and 16 September at The Growth Hub at the University of Gloucestershire campus.

A summary of the results and detailed responses to the main themes identified from the consultation can be found here

A ‘Meet the Contractor’ event will be held ahead of works starting to allow anyone affected by the construction of the scheme to raise questions about the delivery. Details on this event and how to attend will follow once a contractor is appointed.

Further details on the scheme including dates for delivery, progress, press releases and updates on roadworks will be posted on this site.
