Biodiversity and highways

We are working with various partners to conserve and improve the biodiversity associated with Gloucestershire’s highways. A short guide on verges for District, Town and Parish Councils is now available here

In order to implement our statutory duty to conserve biodiversity (Natural Environment & Rural Communities Act), we produce a detailed Highways and Biodiversity Guidance document. This is a useful reference for all those who carry out works on county roads and Public Rights of Way. The document is in line with Plantlife’s best practice guide (2019) but covers a much wider range of topics than just verge management alone.

In partnership with the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust we periodically (re)survey important verges for wildlife and update a Conservation Road Verge (CRV) register. This register concisely sets out the value and location of the most important county sites known to us.
