Temporary closure orders authorise the closure of paths for up to six months. If works exceed six months, it is necessary to apply to the Secretary of State for an extension of the order. Generally, applicants must pay a fee and give the county council at least 12 weeks notice. However emergency closures will occasionally be used where unforeseen problems occur.
