Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been highlighted as a priority in the Health and Wellbeing Strategy.
ACEs are specified traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 years. High or frequent exposure to ACEs, without the support of a trusted adult can lead to toxic stress. There is a large body of evidence that shows the adversity we experience as children can
affect us into adulthood.
Developing resilience through access to a trusted adult in childhood, supportive friends, positive attachments and being engaged in community activities has been shown to improve outcomes even in those who experience high levels of ACEs. This relies on active, thriving, and resilient communities.
