Mid 2023 Population Estimates and Summary Report

The Mid 2023 Population Estimates at County and District Level are now available in the Population Section. In addition we have published a report and a series of infographics summarising the key findings.

The Office for National Statistics have published Mid-2023 population estimates at County and District level. 

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that at mid-year 2023 the  population of Gloucestershire was 659,276. This is an increase  of 1.01% between mid-2022 and mid-2023, which is higher than the South West  population growth of 0.77% and in line with the overall England and Wales population growth of 1.01%. 

Gloucester continues to have the largest population with 134,991 people and Forest of Dean the smallest with 89,104. Between mid-2022-23, Tewkesbury had the highest population growth at 1.92% followed by the Forest of Dean with an increase  of 1.33%. All districts saw growth in their population sizes.

Please not the Mid-2023 estimates for small areas (including wards, MSOA's, LSOA's, COA's) are not expected to be released until autumn 2024. In addition the Mid-2022 estimates at County and District level have been revised, so may differ from those published previously.
