The Virtual Reference Library from Gloucestershire Libraries offers a number of resources that include informative, practical and entertaining music related content.

However, as some of this content may be less familiar, or hidden within more general sources, we thought it would be useful to introduce some of these resources and what they can offer the music lover.

Naxos Music Library not only includes music to listen, but also number of useful and practical resources for the music lover, performer, student, or teacher.

The Labels Section includes a link to Naxos audiobooks, including an entertaining introduction to the history of classical music with narration and musical accompaniment.

The Resources Section includes practical tools such as a music dictionary with illustrative soundtracks, plus guided tours to different periods of classical music and related composers. For music students and teachers, there are aural training exercises suitable for practical music exams, plus a comprehensive study guide to support UK intermediate and A level music studies.

The Junior Subsection includes music for children and music that tells stories, plus an audiobook covering the story of classical music.

For opera lovers, the Opera Subsection includes libretti and synopsis for most operas, alongside more information about related composers.

And finally the Musicology Section provides a selection of opinion, encounters and essays for those interested in the study and critique of all aspects of music.
