Coronavirus (COVID-19) information : National Lockdown – 5th January 2021

Gloucestershire Libraries will remain open to provide essential PC access to residents who cannot get online at home during the national lockdown.

Due to current restrictions, customers requiring access to a computer must book in advance by calling their local library or booking online via  To ensure customer and staff safety, all computer sessions will be reduced to 50-minute slots and are only available for essential use.  Further information can be accessed at

To assist with the Government’s stay at home message our free digital content is available 24/7 and can be accessed with your library card.  Find out how to get started with eBooks, eAudiobooks & eMagazines here

You can also visit our Virtual Reference Library for a range of information resources that can be accessed from home, including the Naxos classical music library, the latest articles from local and national newspapers on NewsBank and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

We are also providing online access to events and activities through our social media and Youtube channels, providing the opportunity to connect and engage safely online.

All loan periods have been extended so there is no need to return your items to a library and no additional fines will be incurred whilst libraries are closed.  You can check your library account online at     

Customers will not be able to enter our library buildings to browse the shelves but we continue to offer our request and collection services for those customers who need to use them.  For more information on these services please visit

If you live in Gloucestershire you can join for free online and  you'll receive an Online membership number:

  • you can start accessing eBooks, eAudio and eMagazines and reference materials online.

You'll need to show us proof of your name and address at a library if you wish to become a full member and borrow items and hire items such as DVDs and use library computers.

If you are under 16 you’ll need to visit a library with a parent or guardian if you wish to have full membership which will give access to more books, DVDs and Internet access.

If you do not have any proof of address, or someone to act as guarantor, then you can become an Instant member – ask staff for details

If you do not have a Gloucestershire address you will need to join in a library

If you do not have a permanent residential address or official documentation you will still have access to our services.

  • Talk to our staff
  • We will accept a personally addressed item that has been through the postal service
  • We will accept evidence such as a Big Issue ID or from a hostel or a charity working with you

If you work or study in Gloucestershire, or live in a county adjacent to Gloucestershire, you may join for free at any Library in the county.

If you are a childminder in Gloucestershire, or live in a county adjacent to Gloucestershire, you may join for free at any Library in the county.

Visitor Membership

If you’re visiting the county you can join as a visitor at any library if you can show us proof of name and address, or a library card from your home area.

You will be able to borrow some books. You will also be able to pay to use our library computers for up to a maximum of 2 hours.
