May 2020

May will not be kept waiting
Advancing each day on a wave of bird song
Sky blue
Buttercup yellow
Defining its own palette
against the improbable greens
Cuckoo call and lark’s song
See me now, hear me now

In mind’s eye I am with you.

Crunching pebbles on a Norfolk beach
breathing in hope on the salty air

Leaning against the wind on a close-cropped hilltop
arms outstretched, head back

Walking barefoot on the scudding, stinging sand
wild and windswept, hair sea-tangled

Watching the cloud shadows move across the dale
from the sun-warmed slab of a millstone crag

Held, like the pale moon in the morning sky
I am impatient to chase Spring’s coat-tails North,
to crest that so familiar hill
and arrive with summer
