Retreat by Rebecca Sillence

For years I craved this silence

Longed for the world to stop

To rest, unfurl and relax into spaces

Once crowded by lists and obligations

To breathe, to sleep, to dream and meet my shadows

And in each room the accumulated clutter

Nagging of tasks unfinished

And projects dreamed and then forgotten

Stare back at me, an evidence of loss

Time spins out, at last unrestrained

Settling again to the pace of water and trees

No one hurries, the stars still shine

What is lost?

To laugh, to weep, to heal and begin again

Where is humanity?

In the kindness of strangers

The hope of shaky crayon rainbows

Separation banished by applause

Birdsong fills the sun-draped gardens

The world can live without us

We are all of equal value in the end
