Health Protection

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

No one likes feeling poorly. Infection control prevents or stops the spread of germs so less people get sick. Gloucestershire County Council works with many other health care organisations to promote good infection prevention and control (IPC) measures and respond to local outbreaks. We work with schools, early years and social care settings like care homes to share the best ways to keep people well.

There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones from infections like coughs, colds, flu, Covid-19 and other viruses.

  • Wash hands and follow advice to “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it”
  • Try to stay at home if you feel unwell
  • Wipe your desk space, including keyboard, phones, tv remotes etc regularly
  • Face masks are optional, and they do help to prevent the spread of germs.

Vaccines

Vaccination is an important component of good IPC. Vaccinations protect people against vaccine preventable infectious diseases, including respiratory diseases. Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations including booster and seasonal doses, helps reduce risk from these.

Are you up to date with your vaccines? Visit the NHS website for information on vaccines and when to have them.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem that impacts all countries and people. AMR happens when pathogens evolve to survive treatment, like antibiotics. Once standard treatments are ineffective, it is easier for infections to persist and spread, and they become more difficult to treat. Read more about AMR in our Joint Strategic Needs Assessment on Inform Gloucestershire.
