A417 Over Causeway - Bridge Maintenance

Essential bridge maintenance work on the Over Causeway in Gloucester starts on 17th September until 12th October overnight between 8pm and 6am on weekdays.

19th September UPDATE - the bridge work that was scheduled to commence this week has now been postponed until Monday 24th September, due to the weather forecast.

One side of the carriageway will be open at all times to minimise disruption.

Work will begin on the A417 northbound, towards the Over Roundabout, meaning the lane will be fully closed over night. Weather depending, this should take around two weeks. Work will then switch to the southbound carriageway, towards the city centre.

A417 Over Causeway - Bridge Maintenance

Essential bridge maintenance work on the Over Causeway in Gloucester starts on 17th September until 12th October overnight between 8pm and 6am on weekdays. One side of the carriageway will be open at all times to minimise disruption.

The Over Causeway is used everyday by hundreds of commuters and is starting to show signs of tiredness. To help bring it back to life, crews will be replacing the old with the new, 14 of the new in fact. Fourteen joints will be installed over three weeks, with a total length of 102 metres.

Not only are these joints brand new, but they’re also much better and will mean that future maintenance of the bridge will be drastically reduced. In order to make the most of the time spent at Over Causeway, a total of 640m of drains will also be cleaned; helping water to drain away and reducing the risk of flooding.

First, work will be on the A417 northbound, towards the Over Roundabout, meaning the lane will be fully closed over night. Weather depending, this should take two weeks. Once that side of the bridge has been fully restored, work will start on the southbound side.
