A466 Wye Valley - Bank Stabilisation Work

A major safety scheme to stablise the embankment just north of Bigsweir Bridge will start on Wednesday 26th September. Due to the nature of the scheme, a full road closure will be in place on either side of the work site for the duration of the scheme, due to finish in early December.

The embankment above the A466 just north of Bigsweir Bridge has been unstable for some time. Regular monitoring inspections by the highways geotechnical team have confirmed that the embankment is deteriorating and becoming increasingly unstable.

In January this year, temporary two way traffic lights and concrete barriers were installed in the centre of the road to establish a safe, single running lane for traffic.

Now that all the consents have been obtained, work will start to scale back, pin and net the embankment to prevent potential rock falls in the future.

Road closure

Due to the narrowness of the carriageway and the large scale machinery involved in the work, it will be necessary for us to close the road for the duration of the scheme. Both the machinery and the rock debris will be too large to clear the site at the end of each day which means the road closure will be in place 24/7 - this is for the safety of the road users and our workforce.

There will be no access for through traffic between Redbrook and St Arvans, however a diversion route suitable for all types of vehicles will be clearly signed. Local access on either side of the road closure will be maintained.

Following the completion of the works in December, the road will be re-opened for two way traffic.
