What happens during a HFSV?

Our CSAs and firefighters are specially trained to offer fire safety advice as well as guidance on general wellbeing.

This includes looking out for issues such as:

  • risk of falls
  • cold homes
  • flu or winter illnesses
  • loneliness or social isolation (particularly for people aged 70+)

If the fitting of smoke alarms is recommended during a HFSV, these will be supplied and fitted free of charge.

If you are concerned about a risk of fire in your home or someone else's home, please email at SkillzoneCFSTeam@glosfire.gov.uk or call our advice line on 0800 180 4140.

Alternatively, you can use the online home fire safety check. The easy-to-follow home fire safety check has been developed through a partnership between the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), FireKills and Safelincs. It will take you through your home room by room and the simple questions will help you spot any fire risks.

The tool will then offer tips and advice on how to reduce those risks, and at the end, you will receive a personalised fire safety action plan to help keep you and your household safe.

Home Fire Safety Visits - verifying it's us visiting you

We want you to feel safe and reassured when we visit your home.

If you want to check whether the person at your door works for our Service please call us on 0800 180 4140.

There are certain things you can look for to check if the person is genuine. If a member of fire service staff visits your home they will:-

  • be wearing a Service uniform
  • be carrying a Service ID card* with their name printed on it
  • identify themselves as a member of the Service and the purpose for their visit
  • never quote for work to be done or charge a fee for the visit
  • be parked nearby in a fire service vehicle (where possible).

*if you have difficulty reading the ID card, the fire officer will help find a neighbour to verify the ID.

Check if a call from the fire service is genuine

We will never ask you for money or try to sell you a service such as advertising or payment for a Home Fire Safety Visit.

If you have received an unexpected call that you're not sure is from us, end the call and (if possible) call us from a different phone.

If you are concerned that a caller is not genuinely from the fire service, follow these steps.

  • make a note of the caller's name and number;
  • hang up the phone;
  • don't call the number back directly;
  • contact us to verify if the call you have received is genuine. You can emails us at at SkillzoneCFSTeam@glosfire.gov.uk or call us on 0800 180 4140.

Unfortunately, there have been instances where fraudulent salespeople have contacted businesses claiming to be acting for the Service. If you have transferred money to a scammer within the past 24 hours, report this to the police immediately by calling 101.

If you haven't transferred any money, or have transferred money over 24 hours ago, report the scam to Citizen's Advice.

Reporting a scam helps track down and stop scammers.
