Safe and Well

Safety in the Home

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service has a dedicated team of operational firefighters and Community Safety Advisors (CSA's) that conduct 'Safe and Well' visits at people's homes throughout Gloucestershire.

The CSA's have received additional training to give people in their homes not only fire safety advice, but advice on their general wellbeing. This additional training ensures the CSA's can recognise winter-related illnesses and issues, such as falls, cold homes, flu and social isolation during health and wellbeing checks for the over 65s.

If the fitting of smoke alarms is recommended during a 'Safe and Well' visit, these will be supplied and fitted free of charge.

If you are concerned about a risk of fire in your home or someone who you feel is at risk from a fire in their home, please call the advice line 0800 180 4140 or email SkillzoneCFSTeam@glosfire.gov.uk.

Alternatively, you can use the online home fire safety check. The easy-to-follow home fire safety check has been developed through a partnership between the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), Fire Kills and Safelincs. It will take you through your home one room at a time and the simple questions will help you spot fire risks as you go around your home.

The tool will offer tips and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks. At the end, you will receive a personalised fire safety action plan to help keep you and your household safe from fire.

Safe & Well Visit’s – Verifying it’s us visiting you

We want you to feel safe and reassured when we visit your home.

If you want to check whether the person at your door works for our Service please call us on 0800 180 41 40.

There are certain things you can look for to check if the person is genuine. If a member of fire service staff visits your home, they will:

  • be wearing a Service uniform
  • be carrying a Service ID card with their name printed on it
  • identify themselves as a member of the Service and the purpose for their visit
  • never quote for work to be done or charge a fee for the visit
  • be parked nearby in a fire service vehicle (where possible).

If you have difficulty reading the ID card, the fire officer will help find a neighbour to verify the ID.

Check if a call from the fire service is genuine

We will never ask you for money or try to sell you a service such as advertising or payment for a Safe and Well visit.

If you’ve received an unexpected call that you’re not sure is from us, end the call and (if possible) call us from a different phone.

If you’re concerned that a caller is not genuinely from the fire service, follow these steps.

  • Make a note of the caller's name and number.
  • Hang up the phone.
  • Don’t call the number back directly.
  • Contact us to verify if the call you’ve received is genuine. You can call us on 0800 180 4140 or email SkillzoneCFSTeam@glosfire.gov.uk

Unfortunately, there have been instances where fraudulent salespeople have contacted businesses claiming to be acting for the Service. If you have transferred money to a scammer within the past 24 hours, report this to the police immediately by calling 101.

If you haven't transferred any money, or have transferred money over 24 hours ago, report the scam to Citizen's Advice.

Reporting a scam helps track down and stop scammers.
