Apprenticeships and the Levy

What is the Apprenticeship Levy?

It is a fee that employers, with a paybill of over £3million, will have to pay into a central government pot to fund Apprenticeship Training. The money can only be used to pay for training and cannot be used for salary. The money is paid monthly and goes straight into a digital account set up by central government.

You will find further information on the Levy below but more detailed advice can also be found on the following government websites:

Do we have to pay the Levy?

Depending on what type of school you are, you may or may not be subject to the levy. Schools that are employers in their own right (Voluntary Aided, Foundation and Academy) will only pay the Levy if the paybill is more than £3million.

If you are a community or voluntary controlled school you are part of the council and therefore fall under the council’s Levy pot. The school will be required to budget 0.5% of the payroll in your annual budgets. The contribution will be paid on a monthly basis via the payroll.

How do we access our Levy Pot?

For those schools that are employers in their own right and have a paybill of £3million or more, you will be required to register on the Apprenticeship Service (AS) portal. The portal has been developed by central government and will allow you to see your online account as well as view apprenticeship training providers.

If you are a Community or Voluntary Controlled school your levy money will form part of the council’s overall levy pot. As a result the council is responsible for registering with the AS portal. The attached document explains what you need to do, if you want to access funds.

Schools Apprenticeship Process

How do we pay for apprenticeship training if we are not covered by the Levy?

For those schools that are employers in their own right but have a paybill of less than £3million, you will be able to access support for apprenticeship costs via the training provider. The Government will fund 90% and you will pay a 10% top up.
