I have been a SENCO since 2011 and hold the National SENCO Award qualification. Before becoming SENCO I taught for 10 years in mainstream schools in Gloucestershire and was a teaching assistant before that, at a special school in Wiltshire.

My current role involves the statutory requirements that being a SENCO demands, but more importantly monitoring the day to day provision for the children with additional needs across the school. I work strategically as part of the SLT to ensure the pupils are all included at the first point of teaching in the classroom. I work very closely with the teachers, teaching assistants, attendance team and EAL team to supervise the support for pupils and their families, organise intervention support and record and collect data. I then analyse the effectiveness of the support the pupils receive and action plan accordingly.

An element of my work that has been hugely successful is the investment in training for teaching assistants and teachers, using the EEF resources amongst other things, in order to build expertise and reduce the variance in skill amongst our team.

PSHE now also forms a fundamental part of my work alongside a Growth Mind-set action research project I have been working on. I am looking forward to demonstrating the improvement in pupil outcomes for pupils with additional needs as a result.
