Profile
I have worked in Special Education for 20 years. I have had a wide range of experience with pupils with complex needs both as a qualified nurse and as a teacher. I have gained my Masters of Education in Learning Difficulties and Disabilities.
I passionately believe that the teaching and learning of these pupils requires meeting the individual needs of the child. A personalised approach within a holistic curriculum is essential. My experience in curriculum design and assessment, communication strategies, behaviour management, sensory processing difficulties and meeting the health needs of pupils has given me the knowledge to lead this personalised approach within the school and beyond. As a senior leader I organise the CPD of all of the school staff. I have also provided INSET within school, at other schools, for student teachers and have been a guest speaker at Birmingham University.
I am a trustee and member of the editorial board for the journal PMLD LINK. The latter allows me the opportunity to meet and share knowledge with academics, carers and practitioners nationwide. Sharing this relevant and up-to-date good practice and supporting colleagues and families goes beyond my role in school. Consequently, I am a member of the Challenge and Support team, an outreach manager providing support to mainstream schools and am able to support the teaching and learning within the wider community.
