Approval of academy sponsor for Gloucestershire’s new 60 place primary special school for children and young people with Moderate and Additional Learning Needs (MALD)

The Regional Schools Commissioner has approved the Academy Trust that will sponsor the new primary aged special school to open in Stroud in September 2023.

The council’s SEND Commissioning Strategy identifies the need for additional special school places to meet the needs of children and young people with complex special educational needs, enabling us to provide high quality special school places locally.

A free school presumption competition was launched in May 2022 in order to identity an academy trust to sponsor the new school and the Regional Schools Commissioner has now formally approved our recommendation that SAND Academy Trust be appointed. SAND MAT has extensive experience in supporting children and young people with complex special educational needs and disabilities and in delivering high quality inclusive education in a nurturing environment. They already run a number of special schools in Gloucestershire.

The former Severn View Primary Academy site in Stroud will be used to accommodate the new school, providing good access for many different parts of the county.  Answers to some frequently asked questions are available to view on our website.
