Banded Funding

Published
17.02.2022

Banded funding is about allocating funds to settings that will allow creativity and flexibility to achieve outcomes at the earliest opportunity.

For our funding to work in the right way, we need to have the right support available at the right time, so every child can fulfil their potential. The Banded funding initiative aims to give schools more flexibility to support a child or young person with SEND and to receive that support as early as possible to limit further escalation of needs.

Our objective is to design and deliver a banded funding system that helps Early Years’ settings and schools provide support to children at the earliest opportunity.

Further to our previous communication we are pleased to share that the testing phase for this project will begin in March 2022. Our plans are to work with all special schools, 4 mainstream Primary and 4 mainstream secondary schools.  We anticipate this phase to be completed in September/October 2022. The intention during this period is:

  • To test and validate the descriptors (are they clear and understood?)
  • To test and refine the new banding process (is it simpler and better? Does it work?)
  • To collate actual costs of provision to inform future funding
  • To engage key stakeholders, gather feedback and lessons learnt
  • To review and agree the descriptors and process

Throughout this testing phase we will capture and monitor feedback so that we can refine the systems and processes and enable a smooth roll out to the wider system.

We will provide updates during the process, to ensure you’re kept informed as we progress. There will be opportunity for further engagement, and we will connect with you directly regarding this.
