Chemical treatments for head lice are no longer routinely prescribed by GP surgeries in Gloucestershire and community pharmacies are no longer permitted to supply the lotions without charge. The wet combing method is first line treatment for head lice (using a fine-toothed detector comb)

Head Lice Treatment; information from NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

Last year the NHS England Guidance; Conditions for which over the counter items should not routinely be prescribed in primary care:

Guidance for CCGs1 was implemented across Gloucestershire.

Schools and nurseries were informed of this guidance via a letter from NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group to ensure medicines policies were reviewed and amended as necessary.

In the past, chemical treatments for head lice were available from some community pharmacies without charge to the customer or occasionally may have been prescribed by GP surgeries on NHS prescription.

In light of the NHS England Guidance1 chemical treatments are no longer routinely prescribed by GP surgeries in Gloucestershire and community pharmacies are no longer permitted to supply the lotions without charge.

The wet combing method is first line treatment for head lice (using a fine-toothed detector comb). Chemical treatment is only recommended in exceptional circumstances and in these cases over the counter medicines can be purchased from a community pharmacy.1

More information on the correct procedure for the ‘wet combing method’ is available from The Spotty Book2 or NHS Choices website3
