Support for families considering EHE

Schools must not encourage or pressure parents to de-register their child for elective home education, nor should they create barriers or dissuade parents from doing so. However, Gloucestershire County Council encourages schools to be professionally curious about the reasons behind a parent's decision.

It is both reasonable and responsible for schools to ensure that parents have a clear understanding of what home education entails. EHE is most successful when it is a positive, informed, and committed choice.

GCC requests that schools:

  • Arrange a meeting with parents when de-registration is being considered.
  • Offer the opportunity for a member of the Education Inclusion Service to attend.
  • Use the provided meeting template to guide the conversation and ensure key information is shared.

While this meeting is encouraged, it should not delay the submission of the official de-registration form, which must be sent promptly to the Education Inclusion Service.
