Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans
The Department for Transport (DfT) launched its Cycle and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) in April 2017. The strategy outlines Government’s ambition ‘to make cycling and walking the natural choices for shorter journeys or as part of a longer journey’.
What is an LCWIP?
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) set out the strategic approach to identifying long-term cycling and walking improvements and make the case for future investment through funding bids and by informing discussions with developers.
Central Severn Vale Infrastructure Plan
Gloucestershire developed a pilot Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan in 2018 for the Central Severn Vale. In 2019 a network of cycling corridors and further improvements were identified. The outcome of this work can be viewed in the attached plan.
Stroud and Tewkesbury Infrastructure Plans
In 2020, draft networks were established in the towns of Stroud and Tewkesbury, these will be consulted upon and published in 2021.
The authority is developing an overarching strategy that will identify a programme for developing plans in all the major towns across Gloucestershire.
We will continue to update and refine the approach to developing infrastructure plans in response to Department for Transport evaluation of the CWIS process and currently anticipate that moving forward, the LCWIP will be informed by urban centres and strategic allocations across the county. Our intention is to review Cirencester, Cam & Dursley and the corridor between Gloucester and Highnam in 2021/22.
We will review our existing plans to ensure that they meet national cycle design guidance, LTN1/20.
In addition to LCWIPS a digital map has also been produced to show how emerging networks compliment Local Transport Plan ambitions. This map includes existing known infrastructure and strategic desire lines, each layer of information can be overlaid to help build a visual picture of the broader strategy for cycling across Gloucestershire.
