Messages from Gloucestershire leaders

Leaders at Gloucestershire County Council and partners share messages of support for the campaign and their own thoughts and commitment to equality.

Chris Spencer

“Black history month is an important event, not just because of the need to celebrate the achievements of black and ethnic minority communities across the UK but also to recognise the impact of history on current perceptions about the place of black people in Britain today. Santayana said  “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” and that is why history is so important. There clearly remains a number of issues for our society  which still require resolution as demonstrated by recent events including the Windrush  scandal, the death of George Floyd and the prominence of the BLM movement. We all have a part to play in creating a more integrated and harmonious community in which everyone plays a part and where everyone has equality of opportunity. Black history month is just one way in which we can realise our aspirations.”
