Are you interested in becoming a teacher or trainer? From our Level 3 Award that introduces you to the teaching environment, to our more advanced Level 4 qualification for those who wish to upskill; open up new possibilities to teaching in the Post-16 Sector and make a difference to people's lives.

This is an introductory teaching course, for people interested in becoming a teacher or trainer in the post-16 education and skills sector. It is also suitable for people who are new to teaching, or who have to deliver teaching or training as part of their role. You may wish to earn money by teaching your hobby, skill, or trade to others. This course will provide you with the practice and the confidence to do so.

Is this the right level for me?

This course is suitable for you if:

  • You have no teaching or training experience but would like to learn the skills
  • You are new to teaching or training but need to do it for work or voluntary roles
  • You want to earn some money by teaching your skill, trade or hobby to others

The Level 3 will provide you with the knowledge and practice to develop your confidence.

Course content

The course will cover the basic skills and knowledge required when teaching:

  • Roles, responsibilities, and relationships in education
  • Creating an inclusive learning environment
  • Using inclusive teaching and learning approaches
  • Lesson planning
  • Assessing learning

If you are interested in working as an assessor, there are optional units that you can earn credits for. Please speak to a member of the team for more information

How will I be assessed?

You are required to complete 3 units to a total of 12 credits. These are as follows:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities, and relationships in education & training (3 credits)
  • Understanding and using inclusive approaches in education & training (6 credits)
  • Understanding assessment in education & training (3 credits)

You will also:

  • Complete written assignments
  • Attend 6 group learning sessions
  • Evaluate basic classroom teaching sessions delivered by your peers
  • Deliver a short micro-teach on a topic of your choice

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the course. You need competent English communication skills to complete written assignments and deliver your micro-teach. You will need sufficient digital skills to manage your online portfolio. Within the profession, you need Maths and English skills at Level 2 (GCSE grade 4), and we will advise you on further study if you identify this an area for development.

This course is for those working in the post-16 education and skills sector. If you are new to teaching, perhaps because you need to undertake it as part of your job or
have already been teaching or tutoring for a while but wish to gain a formal qualification, then this course is for you. You must have access to at least 30 hours of
teaching practice with learners if you wish to do this qualification. The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need as a teacher or trainer. It will equip assessors who are required to deliver training as part of the apprenticeship standards.

Is this the right level for me?

This course is suitable for you if:

  • You are already working as a teacher or trainer in Further Education
  • You are new to the teaching or training role
  • You are an experienced educator, but have no formal teaching or training qualification
  • You are an assessor required to deliver training as part of the apprenticeship standards
  • You deliver 30 or more hours teaching or training over an academic year

Course Content

To achieve your Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training you must earn a minimum of 36 credits. 21 credits must be achieved from the mandatory units, plus a minimum of 15 credits from optional units. We recommend Teaching in a Specialist Area as your optional unit, but dependent on your requirements you have the option to choose from a range of additional units to earn your 15 credits. You can discuss this further at your initial course interview.

Mandatory Units

  • Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training (3 credits)
  • Planning to Meet the Needs of Learners in Education and Training (3 credits)
  • Delivering Education and Training (6 credits)
  • Using Resources for Education and Training (6 credits)
  • Assessing Learners in Education and Training (3 credits)
  • Teaching in a specialist area (15 credits)
  • Optional unit/s up to the value of 15 credits

How will I be assessed?

  • You and your tutor will use an online learning platform to keep a record of evidence of your progress and achievements.
  • You will demonstrate your competence by:
  • Participating in group learning sessions, including group discussions, delivering short presentations, and sharing good practice
  • Evaluating and recording your reflections on your own practice
  • Being observed for 3-6 sessions of your teaching practice - a maximum of 3 hours in total
  • Completing written assignments and your learning journal
  • We aim to assess you ‘holistically’. That is, there is not one way of demonstrating your achievement, we use a range of methods to ensure that you have covered all aspects of the requirements.

How long do I have to complete the course? You have 12 months to complete the course.

Entry requirements

You must be able to demonstrate a good level of competence in Maths, English and ICT skills. If you do not have maths and/or English qualifications to a Level 2, (GSCE Grade 4) you will be required to do an initial assessment of these skills, and we will advise you further when you have your results. You must have access to 30 hours of teaching/training contact hours with learners in post-16 education. This can include live remote delivery, i.e., delivery where the tutor and learners are simultaneously present online and engaged and there is live interaction.

Cost: £1285 - This covers the cost of your tuition and assessment fees and includes the course textbook. You can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for this qualification. Payment plans also available.
