I currently use alternative routes which feel safer.
There is no need for much of new cycle route as there is already one either side of the main road, at Merrivale Road and through the University. These alternatives need to be better promoted.
Are there not better and quieter roads to use for the cycleway, such as Elmbridge Road or Merevale Road, taking cyclists away from the main road traffic?
Our response...
The Gloucester to Cheltenham route was chosen for directness, access to homes and employment, linking Longlevens, Innsworth, Churchdown and Staverton with Gloucester and Cheltenham. The scheme is part of the wider Cycle spine, ultimately extending to Bishops Cleeve and Stroud. This is part of the Gloucestershire Local Transport Plan to prioritise active travel for all, support public health and reduce carbon emissions.
The new cycleway will be predominantly away from traffic and will form a continuous facility which will be attractive to all ages and abilities, including those from underrepresented groups in the community. There are alternative routes on side roads, but they do not form a direct link between Gloucester and Cheltenham and do not meet the required standards. However, the scheme has been designed to consider links to side roads and make it easier for cyclists to join and leave the route at many locations. The improvements for cyclists at side road junctions and further future improvements will help to encourage and promote access to the cycle spine.
Once complete, the route will be adopted as part of the National Cycle Network as a primary route.
