Carriageway space

Your comments...

The Carriageway is narrow enough as it is.

Improve what is currently there without trying to narrow an already narrow road.

I cannot see how you're going to fit a cycle lane and the roadway in some of the narrower sections of the route.

There are some extremely narrow sections of shared use pavement on busy sections of the route which make it dangerous and less friendly to all road users.

How will larger vehicles use the route, particularly the emergency services.

Our response...

The reduction in road width has been carefully considered as part of the design. The minimum width for buses and other large vehicles has been maintained at all times. The reduction in carriageway width complies to the required Highways standards and has been done in consultation with the bus operators and other organisations, such as the emergency services.

The reduction in carriageway width is in order to accommodate the extra space for cyclists and pedestrians to meet theĀ standards set by the Department for Transport (DFT). The standards dictate that space is reallocated from the main carriageway to accommodate the required extra space for cyclists and pedestrians.

The reduction in road width will not have a negative impact on traffic congestion. The road is no narrower than many roads in the County and as always vehicles are required to wait and make necessary movements to allow emergency vehicles to pass.
