Existing cycleways are often underused due to lack of maintenance. Many areas are not well lit especially in the winter which discourages people from using them.
Maintenance of the existing network of cycleways is poor, many of which are falling into disrepair. For example, the old route from Gloucester to Cheltenham. The section on north side of Estcourt Road is dangerous for cyclists as the trees are overgrown. Elmbridge Road cycle lane also needs improvement given that this links to the new cycleway.
There appears to be little consideration given to the maintenance of Cycleways once they have been built.
The maintenance of both existing and new cycle routes, including sweeping, vegetation clearance, surfacing and markings, and gritting during winter needs to take place in order for these to be used. Is funding in place to ensure that the facilities are well maintained?
The Subway at Elmbridge Court roundabout is poorly lit and too dark during the daytime. This also feel unsafe to use and needs to be improved.

Within the design process every effort is being made to reduce ongoing maintenance requirements with specialist technical input at every stage. Future maintenance regimes for the cycle spine are currently being reviewed including winter maintenance activities and appropriate levels of maintenance will be provided.
The Subway at Elmbridge Court roundabout is maintained by National Highways. We understand that there are several problems with the subway and efforts are being made by the Council to bring this to the attention of National Highways to ensure that this is improved.
