Motor vehicles and driver behaviour

Your comments...

People pulling out from driveways will struggle not to block cycle lanes.

Cars parking on the cycleway will cause safety issues, forcing cyclists on to the road.

There is a serious lack of awareness from motorists about the new guidance in the highway code. Many cyclists feel extremely vulnerable when riding.

There is little enforcement of the traffic laws leading to dangerous driving and behaviour.

Our response...

The proposed scheme is designed to reflect the changes in the Highway Code whereby cyclists and pedestrians have priority over motor vehicles at side road crossings. Changes to junction layouts, by making these tighter, and narrower carriageway widths will also help to encourage lower speeds.

The Highway Code also confirms that priority must be given by motorists to cyclists and pedestrians when accessing their driveways. The design provided will allow motorists to slowly move forward into the footway to give them better visibility to see cyclists and the main carriageway. We expect there to be a bedding in period with the new road layout and for drivers to exercise caution.

Following consultation, a review has taken place to further improve sight lines where possible. In addition, features such as continuous side road crossings support a low-speed environment and encourage pedestrian and cycle priority. This layout is entirely consistent with that used throughout the country and has been reviewed by a range of industry experts.
