Preference for keeping the existing cycling provision

Your comments...

Current cycle facilities along this route are ok and I have no problems using it.

The current facilities are well used by experienced and regular cyclists. Attempts to change these will make the situation worse as these cyclists will continue to use the road.

As it is, it is a safe route. Just need to solve the pothole situation.

The existing facilities here are fine as they are. You think you're making the roads safer for cyclists and drivers, but you're going to make it worse for pedestrians.

Our response...

One of the key objectives of the cycleway is to attract new, inexperienced, or returning cyclists and to provide safe, attractive, and direct cycling provision for all. Riders of different abilities, types, and ages will prefer to use cycle tracks separated from the road, which is reflected in the facilities provided. This follows government guidance to deliver better cycling and walking infrastructure found in Gear Change, cycling and walking plan for England. The cycleway also forms part of the Gloucestershire Local Transport Plan to prioritise active travel for all - not just existing cyclists. The scheme also fulfils part of the council's commitment to a greener Gloucestershire, making the county carbon net-zero by 2045 and improving public health by enabling active methods of transport, such as cycling and walking.

The existing on carriageway cycle lanes are narrow, 1m or less in some locations, without any protection from motor vehicles and do not meet the current standards required for cycling. Taking this into consideration, the existing cycle facilities would not meet the criteria for Department for Transport active travel funding streams to improve these. The existing cycling facilities in this area are not attractive to new, inexperienced, or returning cyclists.

Experienced cyclists are fully entitled to continue to cycle on carriageway should they wish.
