Priority at side road junctions

Your comments...

The cycleway has to cross too many side roads to be safe.

Junctions are particularly dangerous, there is a very real risk of injury caused by cars turning in to and out of junctions.

The cycleway will cause cyclists to stop at the many road crossings and junctions along the route as they will not feel safe. This will lead to many of them using the road instead as it is more direct and has fewer risks.

The cycle path priority at junctions needs improved signage to advise motorists, such as vertical signs on posts. the Give Way markings on the road are inadequate and not visible enough. Motorists approach the junctions too fast and are not aware of the change in priority. What happened to the raised humps proposed on the original plans?

Our response...

The scheme has been designed to improve visibility, giving priority to cyclists and slowing traffic when turning at junctions. The changes proposed reflect the changes to the Highway Code whereby cyclists and pedestrians have priority.

We expect that there will be a bedding in period as there is with any changes to driving behaviours, but the route has been designed with this in mind ensuring, there is a clear line of sight and reducing the speed limit allowing drivers more time to prepare.

Following comments received, we are seeking to further strengthen markings and signage to ensure motorists are aware of their responsibility to give way to pedestrians and cyclists at side road junctions to align with the Highway Code.
