Overview

UPDATE: 20 August 2024

Temporary traffic lights were installed to facilitate phase two of the bridge repairs. The temporary lights have now been removed, please see the work updates page for further details about the work.

On Tuesday 20 June 2023, Halfpenny bridge was struck by a vehicle, causing significant damage to the Eastern parapet.

The vehicular impact demolished 4.5 metres of the parapet wall and caused cracking and spalling to an additional 7.5 metres of the parapet. The impact means that a total of 12 metres of the eastern parapet will need deconstructing and rebuilding.

A section of the parapet was dislodged and is currently in the River Thames. As the structure is a scheduled ancient monument, the section of the parapet requires retrieval to assess its suitability for re-use.

The road will remain closed until works are complete to ensure safety to all road users, waterway and site operatives. This will enable the road to be reopened as quickly as possible.
