Background
Cheltenham Cycle Spine forms part of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine, which will extend 26 miles across the County between Stroud in the south and Bishop's Cleeve in the north, incorporating both Gloucester and Cheltenham. It will contribute to a significant cycling and walking network across Gloucestershire, improving quality and connectivity.
The Gloucestershire Cycle Spine will support a greener Gloucestershire and help reduce carbon emissions, supporting improvements to public health and making it easier for people to cycle and walk to work, homes and transport hubs.
It will give a continuous route for cyclists and make cycling and sustainable travel more appealing; helping to get people out of their cars, improving the amount of traffic and addressing, in part, the aims of the Gloucestershire Local transport plan (PDF, 10.6 MB).

Cheltenham Cycle Spine will form a link across Cheltenham between new cycleways to the west (B4063 Gloucester to Cheltenham Cycleway) and north (A435 Cheltenham to Bishops Cleeve Cycleway) and various destinations in Cheltenham including:
- Large residential areas such as Lansdown, Montpellier, the town centre, St Pauls and Pittville.
- Businesses and large employers.
- Schools, Nurseries and University Campuses.
- Transport hubs such as Cheltenham Train Station, Royal Well Bus Station and Arle Court Transport Hub.
- The town centre shopping area including the High Street and Promenade.
- Leisure facilities and sports grounds.
- Shops and attractions.
- Parks, gardens and playgrounds.
