Cheltenham Town Centre & Lansdown Road

Walking and cycling improvements between Lansdown Road railway bridge and Pittville Park, via A40 Lansdown Road, Montpellier and the town centre.

Please note that we are currently engaging with key stakeholders only to gather their initial views on this scheme. Public consultation will be carried out in the future, subject to Active Travel Fund (ATF) funding being gained (details below).

Scheme Overview

The Cheltenham Cycle Spine - Town Centre & Lansdown Road is an Active Travel project which aims to enhance cycling facilities in Cheltenham, by creating a safe and efficient corridor for cyclists to travel between the Gloucester Road / Lansdown Road junction and Pittville Park, via Lansdown Road, Montpellier and the town centre.

The route forms part of Gloucestershire’s wider strategy to connect Stroud to Bishop’s Cleeve, incorporating Gloucester and Cheltenham, with a continuous cycle route. The Cheltenham Cycle Spine - Town Centre & Lansdown Road will form the vital connection between the previously constructed West Cheltenham Transport Improvement Scheme (WCTIS) to the west, and the soon to be constructed A435 Cheltenham to Bishops Cleeve Cycleway Scheme to the north.

It is envisaged that the Cheltenham Cycle Spine - Town Centre & Lansdown Road will allow cyclists quick and convenient access to facilities in Cheltenham town centre, whilst also encouraging an uptake in cycling as a sustainable mode of transport.

The Route

The 3.6km route runs between the Lansdown Road railway bridge and Pittville Park, via A40 Lansdown Road, Montpellier and the town centre.

Where possible, the scheme aims to work within existing constraints, as well as retain and utilise existing features to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment. This strategy has been adopted where possible throughout the entire length of the project.

Funding for the Scheme

The Active Travel Fund (ATF) was first set up early in 2020 by the Government to enable schemes such as this to be realised, with the goal of encouraging more people to travel in a more sustainable way. Several iterations of funding are made accessible by the government at various points in the year. At present we are awaiting the opportunity to seek further funding for detailed design and this current scheme proposal would be used as part of the funding application. At the time of writing there are no committed timelines for undertaking detailed design, or construction of the scheme.

Next Steps

Gloucestershire County Council is currently developing the preliminary design, which is including discussions with key stakeholders.

The scheme will await the next ATF funding opportunity to where an application will be made to secure the development of the detailed design.

Public consultation will take place once funding has been achieved from the ATF and a preliminary design can be presented.

If you are a member of the public who would like to make any comments for us to consider then you are welcome to do so, but please be aware that we are currently engaging with key stakeholders only at this stage and would only be able to reply to you with an acknowledgement. You would need to await the future public consultation stage, where the scheme design will be more developed, before we can fully consider any comments you may have and provide a full reply.
