The “Highways Local” Scheme

This scheme provides an opportunity for County Councillors (Member) to help prioritise certain highway works in their constituency. The scheme provides £30,000 per Member, of which £20,000 must be spent on capital schemes. Members need to engage with their Local Highways Manager before the end of May to assist with:

Forward planning within the financial year

Endorsing capital schemes (e.g. resurfacing, road safety, drainage)

Determining the priorities for:

  • targeting small areas of unsightly/worn out looking roads/footways
  • safety led maintenance
  • drainage repairs
  • dropped kerbs to improve pedestrian crossing points
  • re-pointing of highway retaining walls to maintain and improve appearance

The benefits

This scheme helps to:

  • engage with Members about their local highway issues
  • identify what the Members can locally influence
  • prioritise certain work to ensure action within the financial year
  • contribute to improving network condition
  • reduce the burden on the capital structural maintenance programme
  • help to meet local demand for schemes
