Concern cyclists will not use the facilities
Cyclists will not use the cycle lanes - not enough use of the current cycle facilities to justify more.
Our response...
There is significant independent and impartial evidence that providing high quality cycle infrastructure increases the number of cyclists as outlined in the second cycling and walking investment strategy. The strategy highlighted that 2020 saw a 46% increase in cycling, demonstrating the potential that exists for this mode of travel if low traffic routes and routes segregated from traffic are available. Cycle lanes provide a safer alternative to roads and have the potential to attract less confident cyclists. They are suitable for all users, including the young, elderly, disabled and the less mobile.
Our proposed route will provide separation from traffic wherever possible, to further attract those who would previously not have considered cycling. Our survey results showed that 57% of respondents would be encouraged to start cycling if the proposed improvements went ahead.
