How will the route connect to other key destinations?
Alternative cycle routes have not been fully considered. How will it connect to other key destinations?
Lack of connectivity to the Railway Station – why is there no connection to a key destination?
How does the cycle proposal link to Gloucester Quays?
Where is the cycle parking? A route without parking at the destinations will not be used.
Cycle tracks should be away from the highway and connect all key locations.
Feeder routes need to be planned, as links to the main Spine are poor from the residential areas.
Our response...
Alternatives routes have been considered and options have been outlined on our FAQs webpage. One of the measures the project is marked against by Active Travel England is directness. Gloucester city centre is a key destination for many cyclists and therefore the route would not score as highly if it did not serve the city centre.
Many key trip generators are served by the route. These include Gloucester College, Gloucestershire University sites, including their campuses, and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. The cycle track also passes Gloucester Railway Station and Gloucester Transport Hub. For access to Gloucester Quays, cyclists can utilise the existing facilities at the Llanthony Road/Spa Road junction or the side road adjacent to South Mooring Car park to access Gloucester Quays.
We are assessing locations for the provision of cycle parking facilities along the route and suggestions from the public would be very much welcomed. You can share your thoughts with us by emailing majorprojects@gloucestershire.gov.uk
This scheme forms part of the wider Gloucestershire Cycle Spine. Gloucestershire Cycle Spine is an ambitious project to create a 26-mile cycling and walking corridor across the county. Once completed, it will be the longest new facility of its type in the country. The cycle spine will provide a continuous link between Stroud in the south and Bishop's Cleeve in the north, incorporating both Gloucester and Cheltenham. It will contribute to a significant cycling and walking network across Gloucestershire, improving the quality and connectivity of cycle and walking facilities delivered to date. Once completed, additional spurs from the route will be added. These will be prioritised based on cycle and walking demand, along with access for communities.
Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) set out the strategic approach to identifying long-term cycling and walking improvements. We are in the process of developing an overarching strategy that will consider connectivity across the county, as well as developing LCWIPs in other areas of the region.
