Kimbrose Triangle
Kimbrose Triangle
Shared space at Kimbrose Triangle should be removed.
The biggest problem in Southgate Street is the zebra crossing at the top. If a Puffin crossing were to be installed instead this would be much safer.
Often just as the road is clear in one direction, pedestrians will arrive from the other, causing some drivers to rush across the crossing as pedestrians are starting to cross. The addition of cyclists arriving (more rapidly) and crossing here could increase the risk of an accident, either between vehicles and cycles, or pedestrians and cycles. Some form of traffic / pedestrian control here could reduce both pedestrian / cycle safety, and exhaust fumes.
Our response...
The recently reopened and widened Llanthony Road section of the Gloucester South West Bypass provides an alternative journey option which avoids Southgate Street. In the long term, the strategy is to encourage vehicles to use Llanthony bypass to make Southgate Street more pedestrian and cyclist friendly and reduce queuing traffic.
In line with suggestions received, there are plans to return kerbs to Kimbrose Triangle and move away from the shared space. The exact extent of the changes is still to be confirmed and subject to further feedback from user groups.
The current proposal is a parallel zebra crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. This is aligned with the strategy for Southgate Street to prioritise pedestrian and cycle movements. Conversely, a puffin crossing would provide dedicated time for vehicles to cross.
