Trees, planting and environment

Exciting development for the County – will provide choice and potentially reduce pollution.

Why are the council following a ‘green agenda’?

Congestion will increase, and air quality deteriorate due to idling engines and queueing.

Narrower roads and highway code changes will create longer vehicle queues - increase emissions.

Our response...

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Cycle tracks are a key part of this strategy, as they can help provide an alternative to car use for short journeys and therefore reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. New cycle tracks can also attract new cyclists to the area and can help to raise awareness of cycling as a mode of transportation, reducing traffic in the long run. Technologies (like start/stop engines) and personal responsibility of drivers not idling their engines will help to reduce the impact on air quality.

Liaison with Gloucester City Council is ongoing regarding the integration of green infrastructure, such as benches and tree planting, along the proposed cycling routes.

The active travel schemes such as this form part of our commitment to tackling climate change and creating a greener, healthier more prosperous Gloucestershire. The wider Gloucestershire Cycle Spine, comprising the B4063 Gloucester to Cheltenham scheme and the A435 Cycle scheme which are both currently under construction, is included as part of the overall Gloucestershire Local Transport Plan.
