Northgate Street - background and construction information
Northgate Street - Spread Eagle Road to The Oxebode
The Northgate Street Cycleway forms a key section of the Gloucester City Centre Cycle Spine, delivering safer, greener and more accessible travel options for residents, visitors, and businesses. The project upgrades Northgate Street between Spread Eagle Road and The Oxebode, creating a high‑quality walking and cycling environment at the heart of the city.
This scheme supports Gloucestershire County Council’s ambition to build a connected, low‑carbon walking and cycling network and contributes to wider regeneration of Gloucester City Centre.
What We Delivered
✅Continuous Footways for Pedestrian Priority
We introduced raised, continuous footways at side roads, giving pedestrians priority and improving safety where vehicles previously dominated.
✅Safer Junction Layouts
Visibility at key junctions has been significantly improved, reducing conflict and enhancing safety for people walking and cycling.
✅Worcester Street Junction Upgrade
The former roundabout at Worcester Street has been converted into a standard signal‑controlled junction, improving clarity for all road users and aligning with modern safety standards.
✅Reduced Speed Environment
Speed limits have been reduced from 30mph to 20mph to create a safer environment and align with the rest of Northgate Street.
✅Accessibility Improvements
Disabled parking spaces have been upgraded to meet current accessibility standards.
Footway surfaces have been enhanced, improving comfort and mobility for pedestrians.
✅Future‑Ready Cycling Infrastructure
While Northgate Street does not contain the segregated two‑way cycle track seen on Southgate Street, it forms a critical connecting section of the continuous cycle spine linking to the wider network across Gloucester.
