Northgate Street - background and construction information

Background

Following the scheme consultation, undertaken in the summer of 2023, a review of the proposals took place.

The scheme represents the next phase in Gloucestershire Council’s ambitious Gloucestershire Cycle Spine, extending across the county from Stroud in the south to Bishop’s Cleeve in the north. Designed to the newest guidelines, it will deliver high-quality cycle and pedestrian facilities and provide better connectivity to key destinations.

Engagement with businesses along the route is taking place in November and December 2024.

Northgate Street - Spread Eagle Road to The Oxebode

Key features of the project include:

  • Improved Visibility at Key Junctions: Enhancements will be made to ensure clearer sightlines and safer navigation.
  • Continues footways at junctions, giving pedestrians priority.
  • Reallocation of Parking Spaces: Certain parking spaces will be reallocated. Disabled parking spaces to be improved to meet current standards.
  • Proposed Speed Limit Reduction: Reduction of the speed limit to 20 mph, aligning with the rest of Northgate Street for consistency and safety.
  • Conversion of roundabout at Worcester Street: The existing roundabout will be transformed into a standard junction to streamline traffic flow.

These changes are aimed at creating a safer, more efficient, and pedestrian and cyclist-friendly environment.

Construction information

Indicative work phasing plan, shared at Meet the Contractor event on 5 March 2025, can be found here.

The team is currently working at the St John’s Lane junction, where improvements are underway to enhance drainage, adjust kerb alignments, and prepare the area for a new paving surface.

At the south-west corner of the St Aldate junction, realignment has been completed. However, progress on the north-west corner is temporarily on hold, awaiting the completion of the nearby university building.

Work has also begun at the opposite The Oxebode junction. This phase includes a new road alignment, the construction of a raised junction, and the introduction of a new seating area to improve both functionality and public space.

Once all junction works are complete, a specialist contractor will apply an imprinted asphalt finish to footways where paving slabs have been replaced. This process involves heating the asphalt and pressing a patterned template into the surface to replicate the appearance of hand-laid paving stones. The surface is then coated in a colour specifically chosen to complement the surrounding environment. This method not only maintains the visual integrity of the area but also offers practical benefits, being more flexible and quicker to install, resulting in much less disruptions to businesses in the area.
