The M5 Junction 10 improvement scheme will upgrade the junction to increase capacity, improve traffic flow, and support safer, more sustainable travel.
Junction Improvements
- Upgrade to a full “all‑movements” junction, allowing travel in all directions.
- Construction of four new slip roads (replacing the existing two).
- Replacement of the Piffs Elm Interchange Bridge with two new single-span overbridges.
- Creation of a new elongated roundabout, linking all approaches via the new bridges.
- Installation of new signage and technology equipment along the M5 (north and south of the junction).
Road Layout and Traffic Management
- Realignment of the A4019 to connect to the new roundabout more safely and efficiently.
- New lighting on the roundabout and its approach roads.
- Speed limits:
- 50mph on the A4019 through the roundabout.
- National speed limit on motorway slip roads.
Environment and Water Management
- Extension of the Leigh Brook culvert beneath the M5 to pass under the new slip roads.
- Retention of the existing River Chelt culvert (no extension required).
- Reprofiling and planting of riverbanks to enhance habitats and biodiversity.
- New drainage system directing surface water to two attenuation basins west of the M5.
- Creation of a flood storage area southeast of the junction to:
- Compensate for lost floodplain
- Reduce flood risk
- Provide new wildlife habitats
Walking, Cycling and Accessibility
- A dedicated route for pedestrians and cyclists through the junction.
- Construction of a new underpass (east of the junction) for:
- Pedestrians
- Cyclists
- Horse riders
- Wildlife
- Rerouting of Public Footpath ABO14 to maintain connectivity.
- Retention of Public Footpath ABO16 (part 2) through the River Chelt culvert.
Access and Local Connectivity
- A new access track northeast of the junction to replace existing field and site access points.
