Planned slip road closures
The scheme will transform M5 Junction 10 into an all-movements junction, allowing drivers to join and leave the motorway in all directions for the first time. It will also support the delivery of more than 20,000 new homes, including over 7,000 affordable homes, while helping unlock economic growth through developments such as Golden Valley and the National Cyber Innovation Centre.
As construction progresses, the next major phase of work requires the closure of the existing northbound entry slip road and southbound exit slip road at Junction 10 from early 2027. The closures are currently anticipated to remain in place for an extended period of around two years, although the final duration is still being reviewed.
The M5 motorway itself will remain open throughout the works. However, drivers will not be able to join the M5 northbound or leave the M5 southbound at Junction 10 while the slip roads are closed. Withybridge Lane will also be closed during some of this period. Signed diversion routes will be put in place and further details will be shared ahead of the closures.
The closures are required to allow some of the most complex elements of the project to be carried out safely and efficiently. Alternative construction and traffic management approaches have been considered, taking into account safety, cost, community impact, disruption to road users and the overall construction programme. Following this assessment, a single extended closure has been identified as the preferred approach, rather than repeatedly opening and closing the slip roads during different stages of construction.
The project team is continuing to work closely with partners, including National Highways, to minimise disruption and assess potential impacts on nearby roads and communities.
