Current road closures

Please check 'GlosRoads' on X (formerly Twitter) for updates and refresh this page to see the latest closures.

Road closures we experience on the network are a rapidly changing picture. We will add updates as soon as we have further information.

This page covers reactive road closures caused by severe weather events, such as flooding, trees, snow, ice and road traffic collisions. For planned road closures please visit our roadworks page.

Please note, we update this page as often as possible, but our X (Twitter) page may have more updated information. Our main focus is key routes (A & B, roads to hospitals and schools) - small, local lanes may not be included in the list below.

During a major incident we may not be able to attend to all incidents as quickly as usual, this means that some roads may remain closed for a number of days.

The list below shows those roads that are closed, impassable or passable with care.

After a flood, we need to inspect the road to make sure it is still safe to travel on. Road closures remain in place until this inspection is done, so please do not move signs.

We understand the frustration caused when roads remain closed after flooding, and we want to explain the steps we must follow to reopen them safely:

  • Initial Clean‑up:
Once floodwater has receded, GCC will ask the relevant District / Borough Council to sweep the road to remove debris, silt, and other hazards left behind.  This will enable us to carry out a detailed safety inspection.

  • Daylight Safety Inspection:
A qualified Safety Inspector will assess the road in daylight to identify any damage, hidden hazards, or risks to road users.

  • Repairs and Remedial Work:
If flooding has caused damage to the carriageway, our teams will carry out any necessary repairs before reopening.

  • Gritting (Weather Dependent):
If road temperatures are low, the road may need to be gritted to ensure it is safe to reopen.

  • Removal of Traffic Management:
Once all checks and repairs are complete, and the road is confirmed safe, our highways team will remove the closure and reopen the route.

Our flood guide will help you if you are affected by flooding and advise you what to do before, during and after flooding occurs.

Please note: any information posted on this page applies to the GCC road network ONLY and not National Highways trunk roads, for example, the A40, A417/A419 and the motorways. Traffic information for National Highways roads can be found on the National Highways website .
