A38/B4008 junction (Hunts Grove)

Update: 19 December 2025
We are pleased to confirm that developer Crest Nicholson has reopened the A38/B4008 junction at Hunts Grove.
The southbound section of B4008 Bristol Road (sometimes referred to as Bath Road), will remain closed initially while the rest of the signalised junction opens.
The junction upgrade is being carried out to support housing growth and improve connectivity for the community. Further work will be carried out in the new year and updates will be provided.

December 2025
Work by developer Crest Nicholson is essential to supporting housing growth and improving long-term connectivity for the community. We are all disappointed with the time it is taking to complete the works, resulting from the granted planning permission, and fully appreciate the inconvenience caused and we are grateful for your continued patience during this period.
The A38 Hunts Grove development is highly complex, and Crest Nicholson was initially aiming to complete all the works, estimated by 20 December. Faced with the challenges and complexity this project has presented we continue to work collaboratively with all parties to achieve the opening of the junction by this date.
The bridge will be reopened to one-way working as it was previously, as there will be additional work required in the new year to implement further safety measures. Updates will be provided.
The developer acknowledges the challenges faced with the project and we are working collaboratively with the developer and their contractors to help the works progress as quickly as possible. The developer remains optimistic that the new junction will be open over the Christmas period pending heavy rain or hard frosts that could delay resurfacing works.
Please be assured that we will continue to monitor progress closely and do everything we can to support Crest Nicholson in addressing any risks to the opening of junction. Our priority is to keep disruption to an absolute minimum while supporting delivery of the long-term benefits this infrastructure will bring to residents and businesses.
September 2025
Cllr Joe Harris, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “We recognise how disruptive the A38 lane and road closures have been for residents and businesses. These works are being delivered by Crest Nicholson as part of the Hunts Grove development and are required to make the junction safe and fit for the future.
“We have been clear with the developer that closures must be kept to an absolute minimum and that diversion routes must be safe and suitable. The official signed diversion is along the A38 and Bristol Road and does not include narrow country lanes. We continue to press the developer and their contractors to manage the works responsibly, to minimise disruption and to provide clear information to local communities.
“While we appreciate people’s frustration, the only way to deliver the infrastructure needed is to carry out these works. We will hold the developer to account to ensure they are completed as quickly and safely as possible.”
What is happening?
Property developer Crest Nicholson and their contractors O'Brien Contractors Limited are carrying out roadworks to improve connectivity south of Gloucester city.
A new signalised junction is being installed across the A38 and the flyover will be altered to carry two-way traffic. This will give residents of Hunts Grove an additional access to the estate, alleviating pressure on the Waterwells Roundabout. With further development coming to the South of Hunts Grove, the junction will serve as the main access for those new future residents, for the two primary schools and other facilities within Hunts Grove.
The junction improvements are being delivered as part of the planning agreement for the wider Hunts Grove development.
To carry out this major infrastructure improvement a series of lane closures will be needed, detailed below.
When will the junction be open?
O'Brien Contractors Limited currently expect the junction to be open and finished on the 20 December. This is a target date which could be subject to change and updates will be provided.
Overnight closures on the A38
Monday 8 – Friday 12 December, 8pm to 6am – 5 nights
Monday 15 - Tuesday 16 December, 8pm to 6am – 2 nights
