A419 Cowcombe Hill Landslip

About the project

Gloucestershire County Council is developing a scheme to repair and stabilise a section of the A419 at Cowcombe Hill near Chalford.

The hillside beneath the road is experiencing ongoing ground movement, which has resulted in cracking within the carriageway. If left untreated, the landslip could affect the long-term safety, resilience and reliability of this important route.

Why the work is needed

Monitoring and ground investigations carried out over recent years have identified movement within the hillside that is affecting the road structure. The project will deliver geotechnical improvements designed to stabilise the slope and reduce the risk of further deterioration.

Current status

The scheme is currently in the design and development stage. Ground investigations, environmental assessments, ecological surveys and engineering reviews are being undertaken to determine the most suitable solution.

An options assessment has been completed and engineering teams are progressing the preferred remediation approach.

Environmental considerations

As part of the design process, Gloucestershire County Council and its consultants are undertaking a range of environmental assessments, including:

  • Ecological surveys.
  • Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA) screening.
  • Protected species assessments.
  • Tree and vegetation assessments.
  • Heritage and cultural heritage reviews.

These studies will help ensure that any works are designed and delivered with appropriate consideration for the area's environmental and landscape sensitivities.

Construction programme

No construction start date has been confirmed.

A provisional road space booking has previously been made to support future construction planning, however the programme remains under review while design work continues. Further details will be shared once the scheme design and delivery programme have been confirmed.

 Keeping you informed

Yes, site survey work has been carried out to assess potential environmental impacts, and the scheme is being designed to take these into account. The environmental assessment will consider all the potential environmental impacts of the scheme and recommend how these can be alleviated.

We have followed national guidelines for the diversion route and road signage, and will continue to monitor traffic in the local area and where appropriate provide additional signs. We strongly recommend vehicles and cyclists use our signed diversion when it is in place as it is suitable for all road users and will help avoid local congestion.

As part of the construction tender process, we will set out requirements for methods of working. This will set out the approach to minimise and mitigate the impacts of noise/pollution etc. during the construction period.
