A466 Wye Valley – Bluebell Cottage

About the project

Work is continuing to develop a long-term solution to address slope instability and highway safety concerns at the Bluebell Cottage section of the A466 Wye Valley route. The project forms part of Gloucestershire County Council's wider programme of safety improvements along the corridor.

What work has taken place?

Over recent months, specialist surveys and investigations have been carried out to improve understanding of the ground conditions and drainage systems affecting this section of the highway. This has included CCTV drainage surveys, ground investigations, geotechnical assessments and utility surveys.

The project team has also been working with local landowners and stakeholders to gather information on private drainage systems, buried services and existing structures that may influence the condition of the slope and surrounding land.

Why are these investigations needed?

The investigations are helping engineers better understand the causes of ongoing ground movement and instability in the area. The information gathered will be used to develop an appropriate and sustainable design solution that improves the resilience and safety of the highway in the long term.

As with many hillside and geotechnical sites, some conditions can only be fully understood once detailed surveys and ground investigations have been completed.

Current activity

Current work includes:

  • Reviewing CCTV and drainage survey information.
  • Assessing the results of recent ground investigations.
  • Developing detailed engineering designs for future stabilisation works.
  • Continuing liaison with landowners and stakeholders where access or site information is required.

Next steps

The information gathered through the surveys and investigations will now be reviewed by the project team to help inform the next stage of detailed design work. This will ensure that any future works are based on a thorough understanding of the site's ground conditions, drainage arrangements and potential risks.

Gloucestershire County Council will continue to provide updates as the project progresses and further information becomes available.

Yes, site survey work has been carried out to assess potential environmental impacts, and the scheme is being designed to take these into account. The environmental assessment will consider all the potential environmental impacts of the scheme and recommend how these can be alleviated.

We have followed national guidelines for the diversion route and road signage, and will continue to monitor traffic in the local area and where appropriate provide additional signs. We strongly recommend vehicles and cyclists use our signed diversion when it is in place as it is suitable for all road users and will help avoid local congestion.

As part of the construction tender process, we will set out requirements for methods of working. This will set out the approach to minimise and mitigate the impacts of noise/pollution etc. during the construction period.
